Raids, they said, were conducted in collaboration with personnel of the Rapid Response Force and Bin Qasim police division. As many as 300 policemen took part in this anti-criminal operation. The operation started at around 1:30pm, when police started a house-to-house search in Asma Apartments behind Al Asif Square. Raids were also conducted in Qayumabad, Sona Gali, Jokhio Colony, Indus Plaza, Afghan Basti and the Super Market area.
According to DSP Qamar Ahmad, personnel of law-enforcement agencies encountered armed resistance when they tried to conduct raid Decent Plaza. In ensuing firing, he said, two alleged suspects were critically wounded, adding that the suspects died on the way to Abbasi Shaheed Hosptial.
He said police had also seized a number of weapons and a letter from one of the suspects in which he tried to inform his "chief" regarding the "successful implementation" of their plan that led to the postponement of "the devil's plan of anti-polio campaign in Karachi". He said one of the deceased appeared to be local and the other suspect appeared to be Afghan. He said that police were trying to ascertain identities of the alleged killers, adding that their bodies had been shifted to the Edhi Morgue.
Officials said that law-enforcement agencies had detained more than two dozen suspects, besides recovering five snatched vehicles during the search operation. Although officials refused to disclose details, but said that some notorious criminals, including the killers of polio workers, were among the detained persons. Eyewitnesses said these areas were cordoned off before the raids and the arrested men were later shifted to unknown places for interrogation. Meanwhile, minor protest demonstrations were held in affected areas. Local resident said that only innocent citizens had been detained and their families would now be asked to pay huge sums to police for their release.
